Medieval warfare often revolved around sieges of castles or cities and artillery was practically non-existent at the time so sieges became battles of attrition. It was usual for trebuchets or catapults to be used to hurl flaming pitch into populated areas to cause fires and to generally terrify inhabitants into surrender. Plague ridden corpses could also be hurled into sieged towns in an early variety of biological warfare. Given the inefficacy of artillery and the inability of invading forces to breach walls, perhaps the most formidable medieval weapon was the castle, however generally the visitors to this site will be thinking of weapons as something smaller, transportable, and able to kill an opponent.
